Can Sugar Shooter become the next Touhou?

I know it's only been two games, but since I saw the first one I loved the gameplay and content, so I supported with a preorder of SS2 as soon as I could. And after seeing threads suggesting characters and spinoffs, I decided to share and suggest variations to the shooter gameplay.

I don't mean to suggest plagiarism, but lately everything is derivation, no? (How many Breakout/Arkanoid variations are there again?)Also, sharing some of my ideas to see if anyone is interested or can make them better. I wrote most of these after playing Rrootage and checking the readme. Some are obviously inspired by Touhou or other games, which I will mention if I can remember them

Using Sugar Shooter as an example, Sugar Burst would the Special (the word I use to refer to the more powerful moves in fighting games and the like rather than Super) while the Skill would be, in this case, Sugar Rush (slow time) in SS1 and Soul Whisk in SS2. In Short, Special is the "bomb" feature while the Skill is a feature that can be used more often, either being switched on and off or needing a "energy bar" to use.

Option Breeder mode
Instead of Powering up, he makes shooting drones
- Special -> Drone Bomb
- Skill -> Make Drone
The bomb uses one Drone.
The bar charges faster when grazing. Full bar makes a free bomb.

Drone  mode
Another Drone version. This time, you set the drones down, and can call them back as needed
Your ship becomes slow while holding the laser key.
- Special -> Bomb
- Skill -> Set Drones

Spy/Artist mode
My version of Shoot the Bullet
- Special -> Photo/Sketch
- Skill -> Professional Focus
My version of Shoot the Bullet. The Spy needs enough Data on Rush attacks, While the Artist just wants perfect art. BTW, Sketch is NOT button-press-fast, it takes TIME to complete!

Mad Axe mode

It's said "Never bring a gun to a knife fight", but axes to a Shooter game... does he even throw them?
NO, he doesn't
- Special -> Mad Dash
- Skill -> Mad Swing
Mad Swing can destroy shots on contact
Dodging shots to close in and literally cut down enemies. Heck of a challenge, I'm sure!

Dual Shields mode
Absolute Defense to a fault
- Special -> Bomb Wave
- Skill -> Reflect Wave
The idea is similar to Giga Wing, except your player cannot shot, only reflect shots and charge for the Bomb or Reflect Wave skills.

Survival/Daredevil  mode

Never bring a gun to a knife fight, but NO shooting to a Shooter game?!? :o
- Special -> Flee
- Skill -> Close call
Skills let you  get out of a jam in a hurry or
My ideas for for these are (what else?) timing out all patterns. For characters, a fearless (overconfident?) monk and a clueless (crazy?) fan getting too close to the action. His Game Over screen would be a silhouette crater one the ground (unknown to the bitter end ;D)

Sounds like you have two topics in one post so it's hard to make a reply to.

1.) Can Sugar Shooter become the next Touhou?
I doubt Sugar Shooter can be the next Touhou. It'll probably be something what people called 'The Gay Touhou'  And I'm perfectly fine with that! ;D Though if we're talking about popularity, it entirely depends on the fan.

Touhou, in my opinion, is a series that grows by fanbase and not Zun himself. It's because he gives people freedom to create their own version of Touhou with the characters he create that Touhou has become so popular.

So whether Sugar Shooter is going to be popular or not, depends on the fan as well :)

2.) Your game idea
I'm not quite sure what the themes are? Maybe it would be better if you can make that clearer. Some of the ideas seem very rough and I don't quite understand what are you talking about at times. For example, the spy/artist one.

Reiga

Yeah...I have no idea what you're saying....

mogmog

I don't quite understand neither.
What do "special" and "skill" mean?
In Sugar Shooter 2, we have Soul Whisk and Sugar Burst. Are they "special" or "skill"?

Unless Japan suddenly becomes more interested in cute boys than girls, nah. lol
I look forward to the series' growth in fanbase though!

"Breeder"
I don't like the sound of that you gAys. lolIwentthere

Sorry about that. I forgot I have been user certain words in a certain way thanks to years of playing certain games. Let's try and clear it all up :o

Using Sugar Shooter as an example Sugar Burst would the Special (the word I use to refer to the more powerful moves in fighting games and the like rather than Super) while the Skill would be, in this case, Sugar Rush (slow time) in SS1 and Soul Whisk in SS2. In Short, Special is the "bomb" feature while the Skill is a feature that can be used more often, either being switched on and off or needing a "energy bar" to use.

"Spy/Artist"- I had in mind the Touhou games Shoot the Bullet and Double Spoiler

Rather than shoot against enemies, you take photos (absorbing the shots for gameplay reasons) but in my idea the spy records it with some artifact, while the artist takes a second (or TWO?!) to actually DRAW the scene! Once you have enough data/sketches, you succeed and move on to the next target.

I for one will probably spread the word about Sugar Shooter to a lot of people, and I'm planting to get any more sequels that come out.  Meanwhile, I'll keep fleshing out this fanon ideas and sharing them with you all.

Here's hoping we have some fun and get better each day! ;D
